Case Study: Transforming a Driveway, Patio and Path for Accessibility in Downend

Introduction

When mobility becomes a daily challenge, even small things, like stepping out the back door, can feel incredibly daunting. That was exactly the situation facing one of our customers in Downend, Bristol. Their home and garden were full of steps that created hazards rather than comfort. They wanted to enjoy their outdoor space without worry, but the layout wasn’t working for them.

At Avon Cobblestone, we know that practicality and design don’t have to be at odds. So, when we were asked to take on this project, we set out to redesign the driveway, patio and path to not only be safer and easier to navigate but also be stylish and long-lasting.

This case study shows how we reshaped the garden with a raised patio, sloped pathway, and a new front wall, all completed in just six days.

The Challenge

The customers had reached a point where their garden simply wasn’t safe to use. Mobility was becoming an increasing concern, and the existing layout only made matters worse.

The problems were clear:

  • Steps everywhere: From the front garden to the back, there were multiple steps that disrupted access and made daily movement risky.
  • A dangerous drop: At the rear, the patio sat a step below the back doors. Each time the customer opened the door, they faced a precarious drop onto the paving.
  • Fragmented levels: The combination of steps and uneven surfaces meant that moving around the garden wasn’t smooth.

What the customer really wanted was straightforward: a safe, step-free garden they could use with confidence. They also didn’t want a purely functional fix. Any solution had to look attractive, complement the home, and add to its kerb appeal.

Our Solution

After reviewing the property and listening carefully to the customer’s needs, we designed a solution that would remove the hazards while upgrading the look of the outdoor spaces.

Here’s what we proposed:

  1. Raise the rear patio: By bringing the patio up to the level of the back doors, we could eliminate the step down and create a seamless transition from house to garden.
  2. Install a French drain: To prevent drainage problems at this new height, we added a French drain along the house wall. This ensures that water runs away safely rather than pooling.
  3. Regrade the side pathway: Instead of steps, we reshaped the pathway to slope gradually from the patio height down to the driveway. This provided continuous, step-free access around the house.
  4. Build a new front wall: For safety, privacy, and appearance, we constructed a new boundary wall at the front of the property.
  5. Choose durable, attractive materials: The patio and path were finished in platinum grey and charcoal sidewalk style imprinted concrete for a modern, timeless look, while the wall was built from classic Staffordshire blue brindle brick.

This plan delivered everything the customer needed: safety, accessibility, and style.

The Process

We knew that the only way to achieve the best results was to work methodically. The project lasted just six days in total.

Step 1: Groundwork and preparation

We began by carefully excavating the existing patio and preparing the base. This step is critical. A strong, level foundation ensures the finished surface remains durable for years to come.

Step 2: Raising the patio

Next, we brought the patio up to match the height of the back doors. Once this was complete, stepping outside became as easy as walking into another room. We installed a French drain to handle water runoff at this new level.

Step 3: Sloping the side pathway

Previously, this side access was broken up by steps. We redesigned it into a smooth, continuous slope leading down to the driveway. This sloped path ensured continuous access around the home without the risk of tripping.

Step 4: Constructing the front wall

To complete the transformation, we built a new front wall using Staffordshire blue brindle bricks. This not only improved security and boundaries but also gave the property a smart, traditional look from the street.

Step 5: Final touches

We finished by installing the platinum grey and charcoal slate imprinted concrete, ensuring every joint and edge was perfectly set. The contrast between the modern slate style and the deep brindle brick gave the whole property a refreshed, coordinated appearance.

The Results

The transformation was immediate and dramatic. What had been a garden full of obstacles became a space the customer could enjoy without fear of tripping or falling.

  • Safe and accessible: The raised patio removed the dangerous step at the back door, and the sloped path ensured continuous, step-free movement to the driveway, creating a safe, accessible outdoor space.
  • Stylish finish: The mix of platinum grey and charcoal paving added a modern look, while the brindle brick wall grounded the design in timeless character.
  • Quick turnaround: In less than a week, the customer’s home now has a safer, smarter outdoor space.
  • Kerb appeal: The new wall and paving improved the look of the property from the street, adding a boost in kerb appeal.
  • Peace of mind: Most importantly, the customer could use their garden confidently again, knowing that it was built with their needs in mind.

Conclusion

This Downend project highlights something we believe strongly at Avon Cobblestone: accessibility and beauty should go hand in hand. Thoughtful design and quality materials can solve mobility challenges without compromising on style.

For homeowners, this case study is a reminder that it’s possible to future-proof your outdoor spaces. Whether it’s anticipating mobility needs, creating a safer environment for children, or simply wanting smoother transitions around your property, the right design makes all the difference.

We’re proud of the outcome here, a project that’s as practical as it is attractive. And most of all, we’re proud that our customers can now enjoy their home and garden with comfort, safety, and confidence.
